Some of the most common questions we are asked by our temporary candidates are surrounding when they can expect to start work, or “can we guarantee consistent hours?”

Temporary candidates come to us for a wide range of reasons surrounding resignations, change of industry or scenery, or they have just landed in Sydney on a Working Holiday Visa and need to cover rent and other costs. It can be an incredibly stressful time in their lives.

As much as we would like to go all Oprah and guarantee “you get temp work, and you get temp work,” we simply cannot make this promise.

Temporary workers fall under casual employment so unlike permanent contracts, hours can never be guaranteed. According to the Fairwork Ombudsman, “A casual employee does not have a firm commitment in advance from an employer about how long they will be employed for, or the days (or hours) they will work.”

In addition to this, there is no paid sick or annual leave, and employment can be ended without notice (unless notice is required by a registered agreement or employment contract). Casual rates include a casual loading to counteract this.

On the contrary, a casual employee does not have to commit to all work offered by an employer depending on their availability. This is where the flexible nature of temporary work comes into play.

Although we cannot guarantee work, we do guarantee that we will always try our best to provide as much work as possible according to your skills and availability. We are in the business of Temporary work so nothing pleases us more than to see happy candidates getting paid each week!

Below are our top three tips for temp workers to maximise your employment opportunities:

  • Do your homework – Make sure you complete the relevant steps for registration as soon as possible so that you are ready to go into work.
  • Keep in regular contact with your Temp Consultant. Notify of any changes to your availability or email your most up to date CV through if you have recently completed a contract through another agency.
  • Go to each temp job with your best foot forward! Often our clients will request temps who have done a great job back the next time they need work.
  • Be flexible with your schedule. If you cannot make the exact booking details work, offer what you can do. Clients are often willing to work around your availability.

Temp Talent are always looking for great candidates so if you are looking for Temporary work, please feel free to email your CV to admin@temptalent.com.au or call (02) 9966 4211.
